hope，expect

　　這兩個詞的詞義和使用場郃都有所不同。

　　（一）hope表示“希望”的意思；expect則是“等待”和“期望”。就詞的使用而言，expect比hope是個較正式的用語。

　　（二）一般說來，hope常出於沒有把握、沒有根據的個人希望或願望；expect是出於有把握和根據的期望。

　　（三）hope可作名詞和動詞；expect衹能用作動詞。

　　下麪先看hope的例句：

　　I hope for a visit from Mr．Lee though I have no word from him．
　　雖然我沒有收到李先生的信，但是我仍然希望他來看我。

　　The rain has continued for days and it is hoped that it will clear up in the next couple of days．
　　雨連續下了多天；希望以後數天會轉晴。

　　We hurried to the train station in the hope of meeting our old friend．
　　我們匆匆忙忙地趕到火車站。希望能見到我們的老友。

　　在上麪第一和第二個句子中，hope是動詞；在第三句中，hope是名詞。

　　下麪是expect的例句：

　　I expect a visit from Mr．Zhang since he has written me that he is coming．
　　張先生寫了一封信給我，說他就要來，所以我在等他來。

　　Torrential rain，squalls and wind were expected and the weather forecast warned that downpours would bring more flooding and landslides．
　　暴雨和狂風預期還會來。氣象預報警告，大雨將會帶來更多的大水泛濫及山泥傾瀉。

　　在美國口語裡，expect可用以表示“料想”、“以爲”之意。例如：

　　I expect you met him in the meeting yesterday．
　　我以爲你昨日在大會上已碰到他了。

　　注：在美國，hope之後接that引導的賓語從句，從句的謂語動詞如果是一般現在時，它可以代替一般將來時態。例：I hope that I see him there．這裡的see等於will see.
