條標及其英譯（十）

六、用詞失儅（poor or wrong diction），如：

　　第十八條 （應用解釋部門）

　　Article 18（Interpretative Department for Implementation of the Present Procedures）

　　按：作爲條標，原文六個字不但已經嚕囌而且無法一目了然，已經不妙。對上列譯文來說，可謂先天不足。然譯者還嫌原文不夠嚕囌，把漢語條標所無的“”這層含義硬塞進英語條標中來，使譯文的嚕囌度（以字數記）陡增了一倍——於心何忍？譯者對條標如此缺乏信心，不如廢棄條標，讓讀者衹讀部門名稱外其長度僅條標兩倍的第十八條條文本身：

　　Article 18 The Leading Group for the Intake of Intelligence from Abroad of Shanghai Municipality shall be responsible for the interpretation of the implementation of the present Procedures

　　在此條標英譯遇難之際，必須從大処著眼，快刀斬亂麻，儅機立斷，挽救此條標於危難之中，試譯如下：

　　（1）Article 18（Interpretation）

　　（2）Article 18（Who to Interpret）

　　即使同一資料來源中另一同類條標的下列譯文也要較本條條標略勝一籌吧：

　　Article 65（Interpretation of Actual Application）

　　The Municipal Real Estate Administration shall be responsible for the interpretation of the actual application of the present Procedures.

　　千萬別以爲譯條標迺雕蟲小計而輕心大意——其中學問大著呢，得多加小心，才不致敗下陣來。
