習語起源103-置牙齒於邊緣
中國人談到恐懼不安的時候,往往引用《詩經·小旻》篇末尾兩句:“戰戰兢兢,如臨深洲。”身臨險地邊緣,人縂是會感到不安的,所以英國人說on edge(在邊緣上),也有緊張、焦慮的意思,例如He was all on edge while waiting for the interview即“他等候麪試的時候,心情十分緊張”。
Set one's teeth on edge(置人家牙齒於邊緣),又是甚麽意思呢? 按這成語出自《聖經·耶利米書》第三十一章:
Every man that eats the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.
凡喫酸葡萄的,牙齒一定酸軟。
這裡的on edge,儅然也是不舒服的意思。現在,人們就用set one's teeth on edge來說“使人家牙根發酸”或“使人感到不安、煩壓”,例如:The sound of a dentist's drill always sets my teeth on edge(我聽見牙鑽的聲音就打冷戰)。
