　　飛機票有一種叫standby ticket（後備機票）。假如原已訂了機票的乘客臨時通知取消行程，航空公司就會出售後備機票給候補的乘客，所以這種機票通常在班機將近起飛時才發售，票價特別便宜。I am afraid there is only one standby ticket for Paris即‘對不起，往巴黎的後備機票衹有一張’。候補的乘客，則叫standby passenger或standby，例如：The standby hurriedly got on the flight（那候補乘客匆匆上機）。On standby即‘候補’，多用來指候補乘搭飛機、火車、輪船等，例如：As I could not get a reservation on the three o'clock flight, I had to go on standby（我無法預訂到三點鍾班機的機票，衹能列入候補名單）。On standby的另一意思，是‘備用’或‘待命而動’，例如：Hundreds of cops are on standby in case the protest becomes a riot（數百警員隨時待命，以防*變成*）。希臘航空公司叫Hellenair，讀者請勿以爲和木馬屠城的女主角海倫(Helen)有什麽關系。根據希臘神話，希臘各部落的始祖叫赫楞(Hellen)，所以Hellenic即‘希臘人的’，a Hellene即‘希臘人’。這兩個字一般是指古希臘人、文化等，例如：往希臘訪古，叫做to go on a Hellenic tour；乘船遊愛琴海覜望希臘古跡，則叫做to take a Hellenic cruise。至於Greek一字，儅然也可以指‘希臘人’或‘希臘的’，但這個字沒有Hellenic或Hellene的遠古味道。
