　　這兩個字僅差一字之微，詞義和使用場郃卻大相逕庭，讀音也不一樣。

　　Later／'leit ／是形容詞late的比較形式，它指時間的先後而言，義：“較後的”、“較新的”，它能作形容詞，也能作副詞。例：

　　Is it later than eleven？
　　現在已過了十一點嗎？

　　This dictionary is a later edition．
　　這本字典的版本是比較新的。

　　Mr．Liang came later than we had expected．
　　梁先生來得比我們預期的要晚些。

　　We'll come to see you again later．
　　我們以後再來看你。

　　Latter／'l$t ／指事物的先後而言，表示“後者”之意，衹能作形容詞，不能作副詞。例：

　　The latter half of his essay contains penetrating observations．
　　他的論文後半部有精辟的看法。

　　The former is a Hong Kong Island street map and the latter is a Kowloon street map．
　　前者是一冊香港街道圖；後者是九龍街道圖。

　　請注意，latter衹能用於指兩樣事物的場郃，如指三樣或三樣以上的東西，應該用 last去指代最後的事物，不能用latter．

　　Latter的副詞是latterly，但此字罕用，一般用lately 或recently代替。latter－day（近代的；現代的）以及his latter end（他的死亡）都是陳舊的用語，現已很少使用。
