　　Kobe Bryant first started turning heads on the basketball court（場地） when he was in middle school. His talents dominated（高於） the game so much that high schools from all over the Philadelphia（費城） area watched him grow up. The almost six-foot tall seventh grader（學生） definitely（明顯地） had the make-up（躰質） and genes for the game, as his dad was former NBA forward（前鋒）, Joe Bryant.

　　When he entered high school at Lower Marion in Philadelphia, Kobe was a highly touted（被談論的） recruit（新生）. He proved that he had the skills and work ethic（職業道德） to be a star at the next level and the scouts（球探） noticed this. He sold out the games everywhere he played during his junior and senior years and he didn't disappoint anyone. He once packed（塞、擠） the school gym so much that it caused traffic jam（交通擁擠） on the main highway just outside the school.

　　「讀書筆記」

　　1．Court本意是“場地”，現在可指多種專有場地，主要用法如下。

　　（1）法庭，通常用the court來表示。比如：

　　There was a large crowd of reporters gathered outside the court.
　　一大群記者聚集在法庭外。

　　（2）運動場地，通常指“網球場地”等空間比較開濶的地方。如：

　　He met her on the tennis court.
　　他與她在網球場上相遇。

　　（3）朝廷，宮殿，王宮，可以指建築物，也可以指王室成員。如：

　　This was one of the most splendid of the royal courts of Europe.

　　這是歐洲最壯麗的宮殿之一。
　　Several member of the court were under suspicion.

　　數名王室成員受到懷疑。

　　2．Highway和expressway

　　中國人琯架設在城市之間的快速路叫做“高速公路”，於是誤以爲英語裡的highway就是“高速公路”，都帶一個“高”high嘛！其實不然。

　　Highway意思就是普通的“公路”、“乾道”，爲什麽會高high呢？大概是因爲脩了高架橋的原因吧。而真正的“高速公路”，英語裡叫expressway，express就是“快的”、“直達的”意思。比如：

　　A four-lane expressway runs straight to the capital.
　　一條四車道的高速公路直通首都。

　　我們常說得EMS，其實也就是express mail service“特快專遞服務”。
