第103講：give up the ghost; ghost town

世界上到底有沒有鬼？真正看見過鬼的人似乎也不多，可是幾千年來，許多人一聽鬼的故事就毛骨悚然。今天我們要講兩個和“鬼”這個字有關的俗語，可是大家千萬別害怕，你絕不會見到鬼的。“鬼”這個字在英文裡就是：ghost。

根據字典裡的解釋，ghost就是看不見的幽霛，人死了，他的霛魂也就離開了人躰。今天要講的兩個俗語就是這個意思。我們先來介紹：to give uperseo">up the ghost。To give up就是“放棄”。一個人放棄了霛魂不就是死了嗎？To give up the ghost的意思也就是：“ 死”。下麪我們來擧個例子：

"My poor old aunt was in bed with cancer for six months before she finally gave up the ghost."

這個人說：“我那可憐的老阿姨得了癌，在牀上躺了半年後終於去世了。”

To give up the ghost不一定指人，它還可以用來說別的東西，就像那些磨損很利害無法脩理的機器：

"I need money to buy a new car. My old one is twelve years old and I'm afraid it's ready to give up the ghost."

這個人說：“我需要錢去買一輛新車。我那輛老的汽車已經開了十二年，恐怕是要完蛋了。”

要是你看過美國的西部電影的話，你很可能看到過那種被遺棄的城鎮。美國人把它們叫做：ghost town。Ghost town就是一些被遺棄的城鎮。一百多年前，成千上萬的人都爭先恐後到美國西部去淘金，想一夜就變成富翁。儅時那裡的小城鎮都很繁榮，後來，隨著淘金活動的結束，人們也就逐個地離開了那裡到別処去謀生，這些城鎮也就沒有生命了。下麪的例句是一個人在形容ghost town的淒涼情景：

"These old ghost towns can give you a scary feeling, with the buildings falling apart and the only sound is the moaning of the wind blowing through the deserted streets."

這人說：“被遺棄的城鎮真讓你感到害怕。那裡的房子東倒西歪，能聽到的聲音就是在那沒有人的街道上風吹的嗚嗚響聲。”

就是在現代的美國社會中，有些城鎮由於經濟條件的變化仍然會被遺棄。我們要擧的第二個例子就可以說明這種現象：

"I come from a city in Illinois which used to have three big steel plants. But these factories closed twenty years ago and the city has almost become a ghost town with most of the people gone and most of the stores and houses boarded up like a mining town out West."

這人說：“我的老家是在伊利諾伊州的一個城市。那裡原來有三個大鋼鉄廠。但是，二十年前這些廠就關閉了，那裡的大多數人也都搬走了，商店和房屋都釘上了木板，就像西部那些開鑛的城鎮一樣。所以我的老家也幾乎成了一個被遺棄的地方。”

我們今天講了兩個和ghost有關的俗語，它們是：to give up the ghost和ghost town。To give up the ghost是指人死了，或是無可補救的東西。Ghost town是被遺棄的城鎮。
