本課您將學到:scare to death(嚇死了!),句型play games with sb(耍花招)

Fear can be fun. Many young people queue up to ride very fast and scary roller coasters(過山車), screaming but enjoying themselves. Other people like to read"goose bumps" books or watch horror(恐怖) movies at night, scared to death but feeling excited. Why do people like being scared?

One reason is that we can play games with fear, find ways to reduce the scariness(恐懼感) by looking away or thinking of something else. To believe we have control over a situation gives us a feeling of power. Scary movies or novels are good practice to prepare young people for the real thing. Thrills(引人興奮的事物) such as roller coaster rides also go to the brain's pleasure center.

不同地區的英文會有一些差別,像"排隊"﹐北美作"line up" ﹐在英國則作"queue up" ,排隊去做什麽就是Queue up (for something)。例如:

We queued up for the bus.

(Many young people queue up)乘坐高速、驚險的過山車, (to ride very fast and scary roller coasters)驚聲尖叫的同時卻享受著另一番樂趣。 (Other people like to read"goose bumps" books or watch horror movies at night)盡琯看得毛骨悚然,(scared to death)還是樂此不疲。(but feeling excited)人們爲什麽喜歡這種被驚嚇的感覺呢?(Why do people like being scared?)

I'm afraid (that) you've been given the wrong address.

Believe it or not, the physically strong young man is scared of the little puppy.

The sudden deafening noise really scared me to death.

(One reason is that we can play games with fear)使用轉移眡線或注意力的方法,(by looking away or thinking of something else)我們可以減輕恐懼感。(find ways to reduce the scariness)能夠控制侷麪也使我們感到自己很強大。(To believe we have control over a situation gives us a feeling of power)看恐怖電影或小說可以提高年輕人應對險境的能力。(Scary movies or novels are good practice to prepare young people for the real thing.) (Thrills such as roller coaster rides also go to the brain's pleasure center.)

The company says it needs about a week to decide how many employees will be called back. One turned-away union employee says he thinks the company is playing games with them.

Don't play games, Mona. I know about the theft, and I know that you know about it. I repeat: why are you here?
