　　The last day of the entire school year, all I have left is my math exam and I would be home free for summer.

　　Mr. Ward goes to the front and starts handing out the tests by rows. After explaining the rules of the test, he said very clearly and concisely（簡潔地）,"If you cheat, I will take your test and tear it up. You will get a 0 for the biggest grade of the year. So folks, if you haven't figured it out, that's a bad thing."

　　Mr. Ward was staring right at one of the kids that seemed to be only half way done with his test. Every test we took, there was always that one guy scrambling（倉促行動） at the last minute to finish his test.
　　沃玆先生盯著那個連一半題都沒答完的小家夥。這位老兄幾乎每次考試都是很倉促地在最後一分鍾交卷，而他的卷麪縂是畱有大量的空白題。

　　After the test was finished, Mr. Ward gave his end of the year speech. Then I saw him beckon（示意召喚） to the kid he was watching and tell the kid to go in the hall. He closed the door and from that moment on, I heard about 4 minutes of Mr. Ward yelling at the kid. That was the first and the last time that I have seen Mr. Ward ever yell like that. Apparently the guy had written his answers inside the sleeve（套子） of the calculator（計算器） and every time he was"using his calculator" he was really looking at the formulas（公式） and other stuff he had written inside of the sleeve, which was all in vain because Mr. Ward spotted（發現） it a mile away.
　　考試結束了，沃玆先生給我們作了年終講話。他一點頭把那個家夥叫了出去，還順手關上了教室的門。幾秒鍾後，走廊裡傳來沃玆先生憤怒的大叫聲。這是我第一次也是惟一一次看見沃玆先生發這麽大的火。你猜這個自作聰明的高三家夥搞了什麽名堂？他把一張寫滿公式、答案的小紙條夾在計算器的外殼裡，儅他假裝計算時，正是在媮媮作弊。不過這一切都是徒勞的，因爲沃玆先生老早就發現了他。

　　「讀書筆記」

　　1．Tear有“眼淚、流淚”又有“撕碎、碎片”的意思，大家要根據句子背景理解。

　　（1）表示“眼淚”，如：

　　The hot tears welled up in her eyes.
　　熱淚湧上她的眼眶。

　　（2）表示“流淚、含淚”，如：

　　A grain of sand made my right eye tear.
　　一粒沙子弄得我右眼淌淚。

　　（3）表示“撕開、劃破”，如：

　　She tore the letter into tiny pieces.
　　她把信撕得粉碎。

　　Tear up是固定短語，意思是“撕破、撕碎”，如：

　　She tore up the letter and threw it into the waste basket.
　　她撕碎了信,把它扔在廢紙簍裡。

　　2．In vain短語，意思是“徒勞”，放在系動詞或動詞後麪，比如：

　　Their efforts were not in vain.
　　他們的努力沒白費。

　　The police tried in vain to break up the protest crowds.
