Before the Red Light

I went by bicycle from the school on my way home yesterday afternoon. I was ready to cross a street to reach my home on the other side when the light turned yellow and then red. I had to stop to wait for the light to turn green， of course.

　　But then I noticed a strange man at the street corner. He was watching people to go [go] （1） across the street while counting his fingers. It seemed that he was an American.

　　I wanted to know what the man was doing and went to the corner to say hello to him. He was very surprised at first， but after a minute， he said hello to me with a smile on his face. Perhaps he has [had] （2） never dreamed that a little Chinese boy could say a little English with him. He told me that there had been more than seventy people go [who went] （3） across the street when the light was red since this morning. With these words， he asked me to look at the street myself， so I did. A young man was trying to reach the other side of the road when the light was red.

　　He then told me that in America， all the people obeyed the traffic rules， and nobody went against the Red Light.

　　At last he said that there might be an accident soon.

　　In the evening， when I went home from school and got to the crossing again， there had just been an accident.

　　I wonder why foreigners can obey rules while people in our country can't do that. Is this one of the reasons why many other countries are more powerful than ours？

　　文章雖有二三処較爲嚴重的語法錯誤，但能聯系實際，記敘簡潔完整，有感而發，最後的問題也很發人深思。文章中某些語言上的不足之処點評脩改如下：

　　（1）watch，see，hear等感官動詞後的不定式賓語補足語，必須去掉to.

　　（2）根據上下文應該用過去完成時。

　　（3）這裡應該用定語從句。根據語法槼範 There be句型的主語帶有動作性定語時，要麽用定語從句，要麽用非謂語結搆，如分詞，看例句：①There is a man who wants to see you.②There is a man sitting over there.上述兩句不能用動詞原形。這是中國學生易出錯的地方。
