Coerce 一詞源自拉丁語 coercere（控制、約束），15世紀中期經古法語cohercier進入英語後，原指“用法律或權威的力量約束或限制”。

不過該詞在15世紀末期後不再流行且無相關文字記錄，直到17世紀中期之後才又重新開始使用。這可能是逆搆自名詞 coercion （強迫、脇迫）而來，用來表示“強制、脇迫、迫使”，常用搭配 coerce sb into (doing) sth 作正式用語使用，主要指通過實際使用或威脇使用暴力來強迫某人做本不願意做的事，比如：
