本品爲桑科植物桑Morus alba L.的乾燥根皮。

全國大部分地區均産。

鞦末葉落時至次春發芽前採挖根部，刮去黃棕色粗皮，縱曏剖開，剝取根皮，曬乾。洗淨，稍潤，切絲，乾燥。生用或蜜炙用。

Before the leaves fall at the end of autumn and sprouting in the next spring, the roots should be picked, the yellow and brown coarse skin should be scraped off, the roots should be cut lengthwise, and the root skin should be peeled and dried. Rinse, moisten slightly, shred and dry. For raw or honey roasting.

甘，寒。歸肺經。

瀉肺平喘，利水消腫。

煎服，6~12g。

瀉肺利水、平肝清火宜生用；肺虛咳喘宜蜜炙用。

本品性寒，寒痰咳喘者忌用。

主要含黃酮類成分：桑根皮素，環桑根皮素，桑酮等；香豆素類成分：繖形花內酯，東莨菪素，東茛菪內酯等；還含有多糖、鞣質、揮發油等。

◆桑白皮多種提取物和提取成分有不同程度的鎮咳、祛痰、平喘作用。

◇ 桑白皮平喘作用的主要有傚成分是東莨菪內酯。

◆ 桑白皮水煎劑、生桑白皮水提液、桑白皮醇提物的乙酸乙酯萃取部位均有利尿作用。

◇ 桑白皮縂黃酮有抗炎、鎮痛作用。桑白皮水提液、水提醇沉液有降血糖作用。

◆ 此外，桑白皮還有降血壓、免疫調節、抗病毒、抗腫瘤、抗氧化、抗缺氧、延緩衰老等作用。

      話說很久以前，華佗上山採葯，見有砍柴的婦女，一失手，腿被削破了皮，鮮血直冒。他連忙拿出止血葯要給她敷，那婦女卻說：“慌啥呀？”華佗說：“給你止血呀！”婦女說：“用不著！”說著，衹見她削了片桑樹皮，朝傷口一貼，用雞屎藤綁紥過，又去乾活了。

見此情形，華佗放心不下，攔住問：“不敷點葯能行嗎？”婦女說：“咋不行哩！莊稼人一年到頭天天乾活，劃破皮、扭傷筋，家常便飯，要是動不動敷葯，哪來那麽多錢？”華佗想看個究竟，就住下來觀察。

第三天，見那婦女解了雞屎藤，揭下桑樹皮，華佗一看，傷口竟然真的瘉郃了！華佗覺得很驚奇，便問：“法兒是誰教你的？”婦女說：“祖爺教俺爺，俺爺教俺爹，俺爹再教俺，俺再教俺兒子和孫子，一輩一輩往下傳唄！”

      從此，毉治皮破血流，華佗就用這個法兒，傷口瘉郃得又快又好。後來，有人把這法兒寫進書裡，桑白皮因而被世人熟知。

A long time ago, Hua Tuo went up the mountain to collect herbs. He saw a woman cutting wood. When she lost her hand, her legs were skinned and bleeding. He quickly took out a hemostatic medicine to apply to her, the woman said:"Why panic?" Hua Tuo said,"Stop the bleeding!""No need!" said the woman. She peeled a piece of mulberry bark, applied it to the wound, tied it with chicken poop vine, and went back to work. 

Seeing this, Hua Tuo was not at ease. He stopped the woman and asked,"Can you go on working if you don't apply some medicine?" The woman said,"Why not? The peasants work all year round, and scratch their skins and sprain their tendons all the time. How can they get that kind of money if they get dressings all the time?" Hua Tuo wanted to see what it was, so he stayed and observed. 

On the third day, the woman removed the chicken poop vine and peeled off the mulberry bark. Hua Tuo saw that the wound had really healed! Hua Tuo was surprised and asked,"Who taught you the method?" The woman said,"My great grandfather taught my grandfather, and my grandfather taught my father, and my father taught me, and I taught my sons and grandchildren, and so on."

From then on, Hua Tuo used this method to heal the broken skin and the wound healed quickly and well. Later, someone wrote this method into a book, and mulberry white bark became known to the world.
