Stymie 是一個源自高爾夫球運動的單詞。話說早在15世紀囌格蘭就開始流行打高爾夫球。不過，一直到了19世紀後，這項運動才開始真正傳入英格蘭以及北美。
同樣是在19世紀，囌格蘭人的高爾夫術語 stymie 也隨之進入英語作名詞表示一方的球介於對方的球與球洞之間而形成的“妨礙球、阻礙球”。
