Why do I  Say This is not a Complete Text?

In the article yesterday I made a humble suggestion that we may understand the concept of text from the point of view of Gestalttheorie: readers automatically make a text complete by combing the text with his/her own experiences, which is the psychological base for the wholeness of a text.

In this article, I want to stress one point, if an incomplete text is given to readers, they will feel uncomfortable as Mozart when he heard a piece of music with the final bar not played. The missing part will make them feel something is missing. It is not complete in logic,plot,argument and feelings.

I have good reason to say so. A text describing the process of Sullivan teaching Helen Keller to read and write. The first part of the text is about What Helen was like before the enlightenment, the second, how the enlightenment went on. Then the text stops abruptly.logically, a text which has told readers something before the enlightenment,while the enlightenment will surely continue to tell something after the enlightenment to show whether the enlightenment has function or not. But in the textbook, the text spare no word to tell anything about this. Personally, it’s not a relatively complete text.the third part is missing.

My conclusion is that such a text is not a good example for students as it is not complete in logic, plot and feelings. At least, an ending which is about what happened after Helen Keller was enlightened is necessary and important. And the achievements that Helen Keller has made after she was literate under the guidance of Sullivan was a wonderful and striking inspiration for the students. So, from both the point of view of form and meaning, the text is incomplete and not a good example for students. I hope the editors will revise it and pay more attention to the relative wholeness of texts.
