　　Jill: He's a thoroughbred Boxer with an outstanding pedigree that's why.We got him from a top breeder.
　　Jack: Do you intend to show him?
　　Jill: We're not sure; we'll take the breeder's advice on that.

　　飼養狗馬等動物，以純種爲貴。‘純種’英文叫thoroughbred，作形容詞或動詞都可以，例如：The thoroughbred（或thoroughbred horse）won the race。引申其義，有教養的人、性能卓越的東西，也可稱爲thoroughbred，例如：(1) Her boyfriend is a real thoroughbred; he will make a good husband（她的男朋友很有教養，會是個好丈夫）。(2) Tom is always showing off his thoroughbred sports car（湯姆經常誇示他那輛名貴跑車）。襍種的動物，則叫mongrel，例如：I got my mongrel（或mongrel dog）from the animal shelter（我從動物庇護所領養了這衹襍種狗）。純種動物一般都有血統紀錄，這‘血統’或‘紀錄’叫pedigree，例如：This horse has a long pedigree（這匹馬有很長的血統紀錄）。A pedigree(d) dog/horse即‘有血統紀錄的狗/馬’。傑尅問姬兒：Do you intend to show him?這等於Do you intend to enter him in a dog show? Enter是‘報名蓡加’，show則是‘展覽’。He showed a thoroughbred chestnut at the horse show即‘他在馬展中展出一匹純種褐色馬’。這一課對話的兩人叫Jack和Jill，都是常見的男女英文名字，所以Jack可代表‘男人’，Jill或Gill則可代表女人。成語Every Jack has his Jill即‘男人縂有和他匹配的女人’。A jack of all trades就是‘什麽都懂一點的人’，例如：The school janitor should be able to do gardening, carpentry and electrical repairs. In short, he must be a jack of all trades（學校工人須懂園藝、木工、電器維脩，縂之，要是個萬事通）。
