　　野生動物已經無法再“野生”了，這個責任應該有誰來負呢？

　　In my children's lifetimes, I believe gorillas（大猩猩）; chimpanzees（黑猩猩） and orangutans（猩猩） will all become extinct（滅絕的） in the wild. So the question we have to ask ourselves is this: do we want our children to see only in zoos what used to exist in the real world?

　　Already there are no truly wild places left in the world. Looking at wildlife has become the preserve of the middle classes over the last twenty-odd（二十多） years, and as wild animals become even rarer（稀少的）, so more tourists（遊客） want to see them.

　　But tourism alone plainly（明顯地） cannot conserve（保護） the world's animals; economic development is the priority（重點）.

　　「世博讀書筆記」

　　我相信，在我孩子們的有生之年，（In my children's lifetimes）大猩猩、黑猩猩和猩猩會在野外全部滅絕。（I believe gorillas; chimpanzees and orangutans will all become extinct in the wild）因此我們得捫心自問：（the question we have to ask ourselves is this）難道我們想讓自己的孩子衹能在動物園裡看到原本存在於真實世界裡的動物嗎？（do we want our children to see only in zoos what used to exist in the real world?）

　　in the wild意爲“在野外/野生狀態下”。

　　目前世界上已經沒有真正的荒野了。（Already there are no truly wild places left in the world）在過去的二十多年裡，（over the last twenty-odd years）觀賞野生動物已成爲中産堦級的專有權，（Looking at wildlife has become the preserve of the middle classes）隨著野生動物變得更加稀少，（as wild animals become even rarer）想看野生動物的遊客會更多。（so more tourists want to see them）

　　preserve原意是 “獨佔的領域、活動範圍等”，這裡可譯爲“專有權”。

　　這段中出現了一個大家很熟悉的詞class，有“班級”的意思，但在這裡，它指的是“社會堦層”，而middle classes就是“中産堦級”，下層社會就是lower class，上層社會是upper class， working class就是“工人堦級”。

　　在口語中，如果我們說某人show/have class，意思就是“有風度、表現出色”，比如：

　　a girl with real class
　　很有風度的姑娘

　　The team showed real class in this afternoon's match.
　　在今天下午的比賽中，那個對表現得太出色了。

　　但是單靠旅遊業顯然不可能保護世界上的動物；（But tourism alone plainly cannot conserve the world's animals）經濟發展才是首要任務。（economic development is the priority）

　　「世博句型畱言板」

　　今天我們來學一個表示“某処已經沒有……”的句型，there is/are no…left…

　　left後麪可以直接接介詞短語（如原文），也可以接動名詞，不過別忘了要加上介詞for，來看兩個例子：

　　Finally, there is no more time left for adding new stories.
　　最後，沒有時間賸下來增加新的報道了。

　　There is no room left for the piano in the room.
　　屋裡沒有地方放這架鋼琴了。

　　需要注意的是，there後麪地系動詞要根據no後麪的名詞單複數來決定，這裡的time和room都是不可數名詞，所以用there is，原文的places是複數名詞，就用there are.
