last，latest

　　這兩個詞都是late的級。用作形容詞時，last 在意義上和latest有點相近，實際上，它們的涵義和使用場郃是不一樣的。

　　Last指連續順序中的最後一個，一般譯作“最後的”，有時譯爲“上一次的”或“過去的”。last的對語是first.例：

　　The last time I saw them was in Paris last year．
　　我最後一次看見他們是去年在巴黎。

　　The last letter of the alphabet is Z．
　　字母表的最後一個字母是Z.

　　I don't know whether you have received my last letter or not．
　　我不知道你是否已收到我上一封信。

　　Latest表示時間上的“最近”，一般譯作“最近的”、“最新的”或“最晚的”。latest的對語是earliest.例：

　　The latest news about the Mideast is the beginning of another round of peace-talks．
　　關於中東的最新消息是另一廻和談已展開。

　　What is the latest fashion in town？
　　城中的最新時尚是什麽？

　　This is his latest novel；we hope it is not his last．
　　這是他最新的著作，我們希望這不是他的最後一部。

　　請注意，last year、last month、last week、last night都是時間狀語，它們的前麪無需使用介詞，但last century卻是例外，我們必須說in the last century或 during the last century.介詞in和during不能省略。
