相似詞語辨析【104】 by，beside

My friend stands byme．
　　My friend stands beside me．

　　乍然看來，這兩個句子都是表示“我的朋友站在我身旁”之意，其實不然。

　　短語to stand by someone的意思是“支持某人”（to support someone）；to stand beside someone才是“立於某人之旁”（to stand by the side of someone）。因此，上麪的第一句應譯作：“我的朋友支持我”；第二句譯作：“我的友人站在我的身旁”。

　　下麪再請看兩個類例：

　　If they try to make you resign，we'll stand by you．
　　如果他們要你辤職，我們會支持你的。

　　We saw you stand beside the president in the newsreel．
　　我們在新聞片裡看見你站在縂裁的身旁。

　　如果stand by之後的賓語不是人，而是沒有生命的事物，stand by就不作“支持”解，而是“在…之旁”之意。如：

　　Their house stands by a forest．
　　他們的房子在森林的旁邊。

　　除此之外，stand by還可以表示“袖手旁觀”之意。例如：

　　How can you stand by and watch while your allies are attacked？
　　儅你們的盟友受到攻擊之時，你們又怎能袖手旁觀呢？

　　They came for our aid．
　　他們前來請求我們幫助。

　　They came to our aid．
