discover，invent

　　這兩個詞都是動詞，都指人們首先見到的新鮮事物而言，但涵義有異。

　　Discover指初次看見本來已存在但以前未被發現的事物（to find out something existing but not yet known），故作“發現”解。如：

　　Columbus discovered America but he did not explore the new continent．
　　哥倫佈發現了美洲，可是他沒有去探索這個新大陸。

　　Modern astronomers have discovered a million such galaxies．
　　現代的天文學家已發現了一百萬類似的星群。

　　The circulation of blood was discovered by Harvey．
　　血液循環是哈維發現的。

　　Invent是指創造前所未有的事物（to create or design some thing not existing before），故作“發明”解。例：

　　Edison invented the electric light bulb．
　　愛迪生發明了電燈泡。

　　A new－type stethoscope has yet to be invented．
　　新型的聽診器有待發明。

　　有時候，invent還可作“捏造”解。例：

　　Don't you know a lie is always invented？
　　謊言縂是捏造出來的，難道你不知道嗎？

　　We must invent an excuse for being late．
　　我們必須編造一個遲到的理由。

　　Discover的名詞是 discovery；invent的名詞是invention.“發現者”是 discoverer：“發明家”是inventor.
