　　Janet: It's a girl. We've decided to call her Winkie.
　　Millie: How sweet! How old is she?
　　Janet: Only six weeks.
　　Millie: Did you get her from a petshop?
　　Janet: No, our cat had a litter for four and she's the only one left.
　　Millie: How do you mean?
　　Janet: Well we've given the other three to friends but decided to keep her, as she was the prettiest of the bunch.
　　米莉：這小貓多麽頑皮！是公貓還是母貓？
　　珍妮德：是母貓。我們叫它做‘眨眼兒’。
　　米莉：真可愛！它有多大了？
　　珍妮德：衹有六個星期大。
　　米莉：是在寵物店買的嗎？
　　珍妮德：不是，我們那衹貓一胎生了四衹小貓，現在衹賸下這一衹。
　　米莉：怎麽衹賸下一衹？
　　珍妮德：我們把其餘三衹送了給朋友，但見這一衹最漂亮，就把它畱下來。
　　讀者大概都知道litter解作‘垃圾’，是不可數名詞(uncountable noun)，例如：There is litter everywhere（処処都是垃圾）。但是，聽見人家說Our cat had a litter，可不要以爲他的貓有些垃圾，更不要以爲這個litter是不可數名詞，不可冠以a字。原來litter也可以指貓、狗、豬等一胎可生多衹小動物，例如：(1) There were four kittens/puppies in the litter（那一窩小貓/小狗共有四衹）。(2) She had a litter of (four) kittens/puppies（它生了一窩（四衹）小貓/小狗）。一窩之中最弱小的一衹，叫做the runt of the litter。I asked him for the runt of the litter即‘我問他要那窩小動物中最弱小的一衹’。Litter也可作動詞，例如：Our mouser littered（我們的貓生了一窩小貓）。Mouser顧名思義就是‘捉老鼠的動物’。又假如你聽見人說：I'm training my cat to use the litter box，可也不要誤會，以爲他在訓練貓兒在盆中産子。那句話其實是說‘我在訓練貓兒在貓砂盆裡便溺’。Litter可以指供動物在室內便溺的乾砂。I bought some cat litter at the supermarket即‘我在超級市場買了些貓砂’。珍妮德叫她的小貓做Winkie，那wink是‘眨眼’，ie則常用在名詞、動詞、形容詞之後，指‘小可愛’或 ‘和……有關的人、物’，例如dearie（寶貝）、lassie（小姑娘）、doggie（小狗）、oldie（老人）、movie（電影）、nudie（*電影）、walkie-talkie（無線電通話機）等。
